A big fan of Eminem and this 20 year old ATP Next
Gen Star Alexander Bublik has two quotes from the American rapper tattooed on
his arms: “You won’t break me; you just make me stronger than I was” and
“Always be a leader and not a follower.
The Next Gen star from Kazakhstan just followed these quotes today and came back saving 3 match points to stave off a possible first round ouster , winning a 2 hr 40 minutes battle against local wild card and a friend Karimov Djurabek in the opening round of the 10th Tashkent ATP Challenger
Winner of the Aptos and Morelos challenger this year, Bublik who Lost in the quarterfinals in Tashkent last year to Mirza Basic spoke to Sunder Iyer of the Tashkent Challenger Media team
About the thriller today?
Me and Djurabek are friends from junior day, all I can say I played one of the hardest matches of the year,
What were you thinking down 3 match points?
I was thinking to myself that I didn’t want to lose this match and but gave it everything , put ball in the court anyway and I just did that and Djurabek made a mistake which allowed me back .. It was Definitely a tough one, I gave up at 2 - 5- but was saying just put ball back , put all the balls back and that’s what I did and won.
About the year that’s gone by?
I should say It’s been great year and my , first full year on the ATP tour , I started at 215 at of the beginning of the year , I passed the Qualies of Australian open , and won two challengers , the first three months of the year were very good , but after French open I lost my momentum ,and just went down..
But I’ve found my form in the last couple of months and made some good results and this win today will give me more confidence
What aim did you set for yourself at the start of the year?
My Aim was to be a top 50 player, but hope that I will be able to finish i top 80 at the end of the year and make it to the main draw of singles in Australian Open
As a Next gen Star your advice to juniors making transition into the senior tour?
Keep believing in yourself and don’t look and imitate other guys, don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself by trying to compete with others and keep giving your best and not giving up
About the Tashkent open Field this year? The field at Tashkent is always tough, and some very good players play here every year, for me if the seeds are ranked below 140 in rankings it’s a very tough event. I love competing here as this tournament tests you.
