Tashkent, October 9: Next Gen Star and third seeded Alexander Bublik saved three match points against Uzbek wild card Jurabek Karimov and entered the second round of the singles at the 10th edition of the $150K Tashkent ATP Challenger being played on the Olympic tennis school courts in Tashkent
In a battle lasting 2 hours and 40 minutes which kept a goodly crowd of tennis lovers on the edge Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik won 7-6(5), 5-7.7-5 saving three match points against his friend and local wildcard Jurabek Karimov
In the other first round matches former winner here Belorussian Uladzimir Ignatik led 5-1 before Adam Pavlasek of Czech Republic retired , Egypt’s hardworking player Mohamed Safwat scored a credible 6-4 , 6-0 win over Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili .
France’s Gleb Sakharov who was born in Tashkent tamed last year’s semifinalist Mirza Basic of Bosnia Herzegovina 6-3 , 7-6(6) , second seeded Thomas Fabbiano of Italy just took over an hour to dispose off another wildcard Temur Ismailov 6-3,6-1 to make the round of sixteen.
" I had given up mentally but egged myself to keep the ball in play and I survived " said Bublik after a match that saw fortunes of both players swing rapidly . After a close and tight first set tiebreak won 7-6(5) by Bublik , both players played tight tennis using each other’s speed , some classical slice backhand rallies were the highlight of the match with both players testing and teasing one another , Karimov found his chance and broke Bublik in the 12th game of the second set to win the second set 7-5.
Karimov moved swiftly to garner a break in the second game of the third set to go up 3-0,4-1 and 5-2 , Karimov was serving 5-3 (40-15) for the match , but Bublik who looked jaded just held on putting all the balls back and let Jurabek go for the kill , Jurabek missed two match points in a row to level score at deuce . Jurabek also had another set point, but Bublik put in a great return to level scores back to deuce and won the next two points to break Jurabek and win the ninth game and get the score to 4-5.
Bublik winner of two Challengers earlier this year at Apos and Morelos claimed the next three games in a row breaking again in the 11th game and winning 7-5 and moving into the second round ." Me and Djurabek are friends from junior days, all I can say I played one of the hardest matches of the year “,
On being down 3 match points, he said " I was thinking to myself that I didn’t want to lose this match and but gave it everything , put ball in the court anyway and I just did that and Djurabek made a mistake which allowed me back .. It was Definitely a tough one, I gave up at 2 - 5- but was saying just put ball back , put all the balls back and that’s what I did and won.
