Maria Timofeeva defeated the tenth-ranked player in the world
Uzbekistan’s Maria Timofeeva confidently advanced to the second round of Wimbledon 2026,
defeating experienced Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-2 in her opening match.
This victory was one of the most significant of Maria’s career. Her opponent a former world No. 10 and the first Brazilian
tennis player in the Open Era to break into the top 10 of the WTA world rankings throughout her career,
Haddad Maia has won four WTA singles titles and eight doubles titles.
The Brazilian tennis player is a semifinalist at the 2023 French Open, a quarterfinalist at the 2024 US Open,
and a winner of the prestigious WTA grass-court tournaments in Nottingham and Birmingham.
Thanks to this victory, Maria Timofeeva earned 70 WTA ranking points and secured 126,000 pounds sterling
(approximately 166,000 U.S. dollars) in prize money.
